What is INSOMNIA?

Insomnia involves dissatisfaction with the quality or quantity of sleep and may include difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep or waking up too early and not being able to go back to sleep. People who suffer from chronic insomnia (poor sleep most nights over 3 months) probably find that it interferes with all aspects of their life, as everything is so much harder without good sleep. Many people with insomnia worry a lot about falling or staying asleep and may experience high anxiety as bedtime approaches. This anxiety can make it harder to fall asleep creating a loop - the more you don't sleep the more you feel desperate to fall asleep and the more you worry about getting sleep the harder it is to fall asleep.

Symptoms of Insomnia

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep

  • Worry about sleep and feeling very anxious about getting enough sleep

  • Avoiding bedtime out of fear that you won't be able to sleep

  • Believing that you can't handle your day if you don't get enough sleep

Common Fears about SLEEP

"If I don't sleep tonight, I'll go crazy!"

This thought reflects a fear that without sleep, one will lose control or experience mental breakdowns. It amplifies the pressure to fall asleep and can increase feelings of anxiety.

"I need to sleep perfectly, or else I’ll feel awful tomorrow."

Perfectionistic thoughts about needing perfect, uninterrupted sleep can increase anxiety. The pressure to sleep “just right” can make it harder to rest, as it focuses on performance rather than relaxation.

"I won't be able to function tomorrow if I don’t sleep."

This thought creates a sense of dread about the next day and fuels anxiety about the consequences of not sleeping, which makes it harder to relax and fall asleep.

"I'm always going to have trouble sleeping."

This thought generalizes past experiences of poor sleep and creates a sense of hopelessness. It can make people feel like there’s no point in even trying to improve their sleep, further reinforcing the cycle.

What to Expect in CBT for Insomnia

CBT for insomnia (CBT-I) is a structured, evidence-based treatment designed to address the root causes of sleep difficulties without relying on medication. During our work together, we’ll track your sleep patterns and identify behaviors—like inconsistent bedtimes, screen use before bed, or long naps—that may be disrupting your natural sleep cycle. You’ll learn practical tools such as stimulus control, sleep restriction, relaxation strategies, and cognitive techniques to challenge anxious thoughts about sleep. Sessions are personalized to your lifestyle and needs, whether you’re dealing with trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early. Many clients in San Jose and across California see meaningful improvements in both sleep quality and daytime functioning within just a few weeks.
